Interview with Sandra Rojas-Gonzalez, producer of feature film "Ancient Lights"
Where do you live?
Vancouver, B.C. Canada
A complete filmography can be found on my website
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m producing my first feature film called "Ancient Lights". It's the story about a girl that after facing an entire life of bullying ends up in a coma, where she discovers a world full of mythical creatures that help her in her journey of self-discovery.
Describe what your job involves
I’m a creative producer, so most of my task are related to get licenses, locations, contracts, budget and schedule a project, assemble a crew together and in general supervise the project from concept to release.
What are the 5 most important things regarding your job?
Attention to detail, strong organized skills, stress management, change adaptability and love for coffee.
What was the inspiration for your film?
I felt the necessity of telling this story, a story about a bullied girl and how she copes with it. I wanted to tell a journey of self discovery and the importance of finding you inner strength that comes from loving and accepting who you truly are.
How long did it take you to write the script?
It took me 3 days for the first draft and then a month and a half to have the final one.
Did you have some promotion/distribution plan or things just happened for you?
For "Ancient Lights" not yet. We plan to submit the film to the festival circuit and the plan is to engage in distribution conversations soon.
How long did it take you to make the film after the script was finished?
"Ancient Lights" is scheduled to film in mid July of this year. We’re just started pre-production
Did you ever use IndieGoGo or Kickstarter to get the funds for your projects?
Currently we have an indiegogo campaign; you can check it by searching "Ancient Lights" in the site or through this link.
We also have sponsor opportunities fro companies or private investors. We’re also doing a lot of negotiations for locations and equipment.
Where can we see your work?
On my vimeo channel, which is still a work in progress as I’m updating it, but I’ve some works there.
How did you start in the industry and how did you progress from then?
I started producing event back in Mexico, but since I was a child I was interested in film. Eventually I moved to Vancouver to study at Vancouver Film School, where I had the opportunity to produce different entertainment properties. Since then I’ve been working as freelance producer
What does it mean for you to be a filmmaker?
It means to be able to tell stories, create experiences, motivate and empower people through the tool I know the best: Media
What did you do (your productions) before your first feature film?
I’ve been doing events, short films, compilation albums, webseries.
What advice would you give to young people starting in the industry?
Never to give up. It might sound cheesy, but is the true. Entertainment industry requires a lot of patient and love to the art. If you feel you don’t have an opportunity, create one. That’s the beauty of indie film. If you have a dream, don’t give up until you achieve it. So far, it has worked for me.
Thank you so much & good luck with all your work.
